Preschool Unit

Overview

(3 years – 5 years)

Pre-schoolers are different from toddlers in that they are developing the basic life skills, independence, and knowledge that they will need as they enter their school years. Pre-schoolers need to learn how to make choices for themselves and how to feel good about the choices they make. It is their job to "learn to take initiative in socially acceptable ways" (Erikson, 1963).

Little People’s Academy recognises that preschool-aged children's style of thinking, and learning can best be described as "what you see is what you get," or reasoning based on the way things look. Pre-schoolers rely heavily on the literal appearance of things as a means of understanding the world around them.

Curriculum

As adults play an important role at this stage in helping children take initiative and explore their environments; with adults' behaviors, attitudes and styles of thinking contributing to preschoolers' development; Little People’s Academy promotes a ‘degree lead’ preschool educational program, where the professional team of staff have accomplished a degree in early years education and care.  In our preschool the children are exposed to many different activities to help them to become confident and competent learners. Some of these include activities relating to pre-mathematical skills; pre-reading and pre-writing skills; early science, botany and zoology; the creative arts including craft work, music, dance and song; and activities that promote physical development.

Children in Indoor Playground

Little People’s Academy ensures to give children of this age plenty of opportunities for make-believe play; play that involves interaction, encouraging them to communicate and use language to negotiate, problem solve, debate, follow through on instruction and share their thoughts, feels and reasons for doing what they have chosen to do.
